Fresh Meadows 

 

Fresh Meadows is a neighborhood located in the northeastern corner of the borough of Queens in New York City. The neighborhood is part of Queens Community Board 11. It is bordered to the north by the Fresh Meadows Playground and Horace Harding Expressway, to the east by St. John’s University, to the south by Union Turnpike, and to the west by Utopia Parkway. The Fresh Meadows neighborhood is built on the former site of the World’s Fair of 1939, and its streets are named after the countries that participated in the fair. The area was originally farmland, but it was developed into a residential neighborhood in the 1940s and 1950s. The Fresh Meadows Shopping Center, built in 1957, was one of the first shopping centers in Queens. The neighborhood has a population of about 10,000 people.

Fresh Meadows is home to a diverse population with a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The Fresh Meadows neighborhood is served by the New York City Police Department’s 107th Precinct.

The area now known as Fresh Meadows was originally settled by the Matinecock Native Americans. English settlers began arriving in the area in the 1640s, and the first recorded European settlement in Fresh Meadows was in 1656. The area remained largely rural until the 20th century, when urbanization began to transform the landscape.

The first major development in Fresh Meadows was the construction of the Fresh Meadows Housing Development in 1945. This project was designed to provide affordable housing for returning World War II veterans and their families. The Fresh Meadows Housing Development was followed by the construction of the Fresh Meadows Shopping Center in 1957.

As of the 2010 census, the neighborhood of Fresh Meadows in Queens, New York City had a population of 28,085. The racial makeup of the neighborhood was 45.4% White, 18.5% Asian, 16.4% African American, 0.1% Native American, 4.9% from other races, and 14.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.5% of the population. The median income for a household in the neighborhood was $68,542, and the median income for a family was $81,923. Males had a median income of $56,542 versus $43,730 for females.

The Fresh Meadows neighborhood in Queens, New York City is well-served by public transportation. The Long Island Rail Road provides service to Penn Station, and the E, F, M, and R subway lines all have stops in Fresh Meadows. Additionally, there are a number of bus routes that serve the area. This makes it easy to get around Fresh Meadows, whether you’re going to work, school, or just running errands.
